Petru Rareș's Trail, Văleni Village
Petru Rareș’s life before his reign is quite obscure. According to historical documents, it seems that as a young man, Petru was a fishmonger in the Galați area, hence his nicknames “Petru Pescarul” (Peter the Fisherman) or “Petru Măjerul” (Peter the Cartman), referring to the large ox-drawn carts used to transport fish in those times.
Petru Rareș’s Trail is a nine-kilometer path winding through thickets of reeds and willows, reaching the other bank of the Prut River. Legend has it that in the past, the great ruler of Moldavia (1527-1538 and 1541-1546) and his companions roamed these places for hunting.
The legend goes that during one of these hunts, Petru Rareș dreamed of the Golden Hills of Văleni bowing down to him, and the next day he learned that he would become the ruler of Moldavia.
Today, this trail remains a historical and cultural heritage of undeniable importance for Southern Moldova.
